P-B-L WINS THE 'BATTLE OF FORD COUNTY' OVER GCMS
-- by Tom Benefiel (9-23-12)
In a defensive battle harkening back to the Greyhound-Mustang battles of old, it
was the Paxton-Buckley-Loda Panthers over the visiting Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley
Falcons, 7-6.
P-B-L's lone score came on a 55-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter by Drew
Schrodt. The extra point was good and the Panthers had a 7-0 halftime lead.
GCMS countered with a long touchdown run of their own in the 3rd quarter by
Jordyn Schultz that went for 49 yards. The extra point was no good and the
Panthers withstood a Falcon rally in the 4th quarter to win.
Schultz was the leading rusher for GCMS with 74 yards and a touchdown. Jesse
Boma was only two of five passing for 17 yards and two costly interceptions.
P-B-L's Jesse Houtzel led the Panther rushing attack with 95 yards. Weston Weber
was three of four passing for 48 yards. The difference in the game was the two
Falcons' turnovers.
The Falcon Player of the Game was senior Nick Retherford for his outstanding
defensive play.

RIDGEVIEW BEATS GCMS IN GIBSON CITY
-- by Tom Benefiel (9-14-12)
GCMS held back the relentless double-wing offense of Ridgeview for awhile, but
it was the Mustangs who pull away at the end to beat the Falcons, 32-13.
Senior Jordyn 'Scud' Schultz electrified the home crowd with an 85-yard opening
kickoff return for a touchdown with 11:50 left in the 1st quarter. The PAT
failed and the Falcons led early, 6-0.
Ridgeview answered with a 34 yard touchdown run from Zach Walker with 6:20 left
in the quarter. Josh Weir converted the 2-point run and Ridgeview led, 8-6.
With 11:55 left in the 2nd quarter, Wes Young scored a touchdown on a 4-yard
run. Young added the 2-point run and Ridgeview was leading 16-6 at halftime.
Jesse Boma had a 4-yard touchdown run for the Falcons with :35 left in the 3rd
quarter. The PAT was good as GCMS pulled to within 16-13 of the Mustangs.
However, in the 4th quarter, Ridgeview scored two touchdowns, with Josh Weier
scoring both on six and 35- yard runs. Both 2-point conversions were
good and Ridgeview had a commanding 32-13 lead with 5:00 left in the game.
GCMS was led in rushing by Jordyn Schultz, who had 60 yards on nine carries.
Jesse Boma was four of 13 on passing for 30 yards and three interceptions.
Walker rushed 10 times for 129 yards and a touchdown for the Mustangs. Workhorse
Josh Weir had 26 carries for 103 yards and a score. Senior quarterback Matt Barnes was two of six on
passing for 13 yards and an interception.
The Falcon Fan of the Game is Sue Gaesser. The Pizza Hut Falcon player of the
game is senior running back 'Scud' Schultz.

TRI-VALLEY WHIPS GCMS
-- by Tom Benefiel (8-31-12)
The Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley varsity football team found out the pre-season
hype surrounding the Tri-Valley Vikings was deserving as the hosts pummeled the
visiting Falcons, 47-0.
Tri-Valley's Caleb Wilson led all ball carriers with 124 yards on 17 carries.
Wilson scored two touchdowns while fellow backfield-mate Braden Herrman scored
four touchdowns with 118 yards on only eight carries.
Quarterback Blake Cowden didn't have to throw much, going one for three on
passing for 36 yards.
GCMS, shut out for the first time since last season's 7-0 loss to Fisher, found
themselves on the wrong end of a lopsided score that culminated in a running
clock for the first time since the 2007 playoffs against a Caleb Pratt-led
Westville team.
The Falcons were led in rushing by Lucas Hixon who had 40 yards on six carries.
Quarterback Jesse Boma had a rough night, rushing for minus- thirteen yards on
six carries. Boma was one of six on passing for only 18 yards and an
interception.
Ross Royal came on in relief for Boma and was two of two passing for 28 yards.
Nick Menuier caught two passes for 33 yards.
The Pizza Hut Falcon Player of the Game is Lucas Hixson. The Falcon Fan of the
Game is Sylvia Day.

GCMS WINS HOME OPENER AGAINST LEXINGTON
-- by Tom Benefiel (8-24-12)
The GCMS Falcons win their 10th consecutive opening football game with a
dominating performance of out-manned Lexington. The final score was 44-0 in
favor of the host Falcons.
The Falcons struck first and often, with senior Jordyn 'Scud' Schultz scoring a
touchdown on a three-yard run. The point-after-touchdown was good and GCMS led
7-0 with 7:27 left in the 1st quarter.
After a safety of Lexington quarterback Donovan Laible made the score 9-0 in
favor of GCMS, the Falcons struck again as Schultz scored another touchdown with
a seven-yard run. The PAT was good and GCMS had a 16-0 1st quarter lead with :13
left on the clock.
With 9:30 left in the 2nd quarter, senior Nick Retherford got into the touchdown
act, scoring on a 17-yard run. The PAT was good again and GCMS led 23-0.
'Scud' Schultz scored his third touchdown on the night on a three-yard dive with
2:30 left in the half. With the PAT conversion, the Falcons held a commanding
30-0 halftime lead over the Minutemen.
After a scoreless 3rd quarter, freshman Nick Menuier scored two 4th quarter
touchdowns - the first on a 29-yard run and the second on a 63-yard blast after
he was nearly tackled for a loss. Both PATs were good and the final score was
44-0.
The Falcons defense decimated Lexington's offense as the Minutemen did almost
nothing offensively. Lexington was held to only 87 total yards (37 yards
rushing, 50 yards passing) while quarterback Donovan Laible was ineffective,
throwing 17 passes while completing only two while being picked off once.
Leading rushers for the 449-yard rushing attack of GCMS were Menuier with 118
yards on only six carries, Lucas Hixon with 99 yards and Retherford with 96
yards. Jesse Boma was only two of three passing for 41 yards on a night where he
didn't need to pass much.
With the win, GCMS Falcons head football coach Mike Allen sets the all-time win
mark in Gibson City football history with his 66th varsity win.
The Pizza Hut Falcon Player of the Game is Nick Retherford. The Falcon Fan of
the Game is Shaun Hiatt.

THE HISTORY
OF GIBSON CITY-PAXTON FOOTBALL
-- by Tom Benefiel (9-16-12)
OUR THANKS TO GCMS HEAD
BASKETBALL COACH RYAN TOMPKINS FOR COMPILING THE
STATISTICS
The 2012 season marks the 91st
consecutive year a football team from Gibson City and
Paxton have played (including the Greyhounds' 1957
forfeit win). The rivalry has been going on
consecutively since the 1922 season, but was first
played before the turn of the 20th century.
There have been at least 123 meetings (121 regular season, two IHSA playoffs) between
the two teams since 1910. For many of the
pre-World War II seasons, Drummer High and Paxton High
played two games. Some years one game was on
Armistice (November 11th) Day, the other held on
Thanksgiving. In later years there would be an
earlier meeting with the second game coming on Armistice
Day. Both schools did this one last time after the
war was over in 1945.
School names have evolved over the
years. While known originally as Gibson High until
1910, the Greyhounds became Drummer Township High School
from 1911 until rural school consolidation changed the
name to Gibson City High School in 1948. The
current consolidation with Melvin-Sibley precipitated a
change to the GCMS Falcons in 1993.
Paxton High School and their
Mustangs mascot would endure during the entire series
until 1990 when they became the Paxton-Buckley-Loda
Panthers.
Until changes in class size and
conference participation separated the schools, the "big
game" of the year was a meeting of both football teams
at the end of the season.

FOOTBALL ENROLLMENT GUIDELINES
-- by Tom Benefiel (8-9-12)
These are the "football
enrollments" and tentative football classes for the 2012
football season as set by the Illinois High School
Association for the Heart of Illinois Conference.
These classifications are not
final but are provided as a reference for coaches,
players, and fans to use throughout the season.
The final classes are not determined until the last day
of the season when the 256-team playoff field is set.
The Falcons' only
non-conference opponent, Paxton-Buckley-Loda has a
football enrollment of 427 students and is listed as a
Class 3A school
