TUSCOLA CLASS '2A' REGIONAL - P-B-L TAKES CONTROL, ENDS FALCONS SEASON -- by Tom Benefiel (2-21-12) The Paxton-Buckley-Loda Panthers, playing without their standout senior Gauge Snider who suffered a concussion in February 17th's game, flounder for a while, then take advantage of very cold shooting by GCMS to hold on to win, 51-40 at the IHSA Class '2A' Regional in Tuscola. The Falcons (2-25) were led in scoring by Jake Johnson with 12 points, followed by Nick Retherford with 11. GCMS shot nine foul shots, making seven. P-B-L's (24-4) Dakota Zenner took up much of the void left by Snider's absence by scoring 22 points, with Tanner Harris scoring 12. The Panthers were 12 of 15 on free-throws. This ends another very frustrating season for coach Ryan Tompkins and his varsity basketball program. However, the team always showed up, played hard, and made no excuses for their play.
SENIOR NIGHT FOR THE GCMS FALCONS -- by Tom Benefiel(2-17-12) It was senior night at the GCMS gymnasium as the varsity Falcons lose to the Lexington Minutemen, 68-56. GCMS (2-24) was led in scoring by Ben Eades with 13 points, followed by eight points from both Zach Carpenter and Seth McCall. The Falcons shot 18 free-throws, making 13. GCMS goes 0-12 in Heart of Illinois Conference play on the season. The Minutemen (17-11) were led by Taylor Schneider with 22 points, with Michael Baker scoring 19 points and Johnny Meints with 14. Lexington was excellent from the free-throw line, making 21 of 24 foul shots. In the earlier game, the sophomore GCMS Falcons beat up on Lexington, 47-27.
FALCONS GO TO HEYWORTH, FIGHT HARD, LOSE -- by Tom Benefiel (2-14-12) The GCMS boys varsity basketball team darts out to an eight-point lead in the first quarter but cannot make it stand up as they fall to the host Heyworth Hornets, 59-55. GCMS was led by Jake Johnson's 14 points. Ben Eades scored 12 points while Nick Retherford had 11 for the Falcons. GCMS shot only four free-throws, making one. The Hornets were paced by the 16 points from Zach Quinn. Spencer Marlett scored 11. Heyworth shot 23 foul shots, making 13.
P-B-L COMES TO TOWN, WHIPS GCMS -- by Tom Benefiel (2-11-12) Another good showing by the GCMS boys varsity was not in the cards Saturday night as the Paxton-Buckley-Loda Panthers beat the Falcons, 55-41. GCMS was led in scoring by Jake and Sam Johnson who scored nine points each. Seth McCall came off the bench and scored five points. The Falcons were six of 13 on free-throws. The Panthers were led by Tanner Harris with 21 points, followed by Drew Schrodt with 13. P-B-L made 13 of 24 free-throw attempts. In the earlier game, the young Falcons win over the sophomore Panthers on a last-second shot by Wiley Hasty, 36-34.
FALCON BOYS BLAST VISITING WATSEKA, WIN! -- by Tom Benefiel (2-7-12) Finally! The GCMS Falcons play their best all-around game of the season as they handle the Watseka Warriors, 72-62. GCMS was led in scoring by Sam Johnson with 22 points. Jake Johnson chipped in 14. GCMS was excellent on free-throws, shooting 26 and making 21. Watseka was led by Daulton DePatis with 15 points, with Austin Blair and Richard Braden with 10 points each. The Warriors shot 11 foul shots, making five. In the earlier game, the sophomore Falcons beat the Warriors, 39-35.
COLD FOURTH QUARTER ENDS SEASON FOR LADY FALCONS -- by Tom Benefiel (2-7-12) In a tightly-contested ballgame held in Fisher at the IHSA Class 'A' Regional semi-finals, it was the host Bunnies over the GCMS Lady Falcons, 29-25. The Falcons (19-10) were led in scoring by Regan Romshek with 14 points, with both Katie Massey and Jaymi Nettleton scoring four points each. Fisher's (19-12) Ashley Miller scored 10 points. The Bunnies outscored the Falcons 9-2 in the pivotal fourth quarter.
RIDGEVIEW BEATS BOYS VARSITY FROM GCMS -- by Tom Benefiel (2-3-12) The Ridgeview Mustangs dart out to a quick 11-0 first quarter lead and cruise to victory over the struggling GCMS Falcons, 53-31. GCMS was led in scoring by Wiley Hasty with nine points, followed by Ross Royal with six. The Falcons were three of three from the foul line. The Mustangs' Brock Heimer scored 14 points, and Josh Weir chipped in 12. Ridgeview shot 16 free-throws, making 12.
LADY FALCONS MOUNT FURIOUS 4th QUARTER COMEBACK, LOSE TO RIDGEVIEW -- by Tom Benefiel (2-2-12) The GCMS Lady Falcons score only 17 points in the first three quarters of their game in Colfax against the Ridgeview Lady Mustangs. However the Falcons turn up the defense and score 16 fourth quarter points, but the Mustangs hold on to win during their Senior night, 43-33. GCMS (19-9) was led in scoring by Jaymi Nettleton with 10 points, followed by Katie Massey with nine. The Falcons shot eight free-throws, making six. Ridgeview (19-9) was led by Paige Jones' 13 points while Jenna Ayers chipped in 10. The Mustangs shot 13 foul shots and made eight. The Mustangs are without the services of senior Megan Jones for the rest of the year after she suffered a knee injury last weekend.
FIELDCREST CONTINUES HOIC DOMINANCE BY BEATING GCMS -- by Tom Benefiel (1-31-12) The GCMS Falcon boys basketball team struggles but rightfully so against the best team of the Heart of Illinois Conference as the Fieldcrest Knights win at home, 51-33. The Falcons were led in scoring by Ben Eades and Gabe Kerber who scored five points each. GCMS shot four free-throws, making two. Brady Sanders scored 14 points for Fieldcrest, while Matthew Baxter added 12. The Knights shot 13 foul shots, making 11. In the earlier (non-broadcast) game, it was the GCMS varsity Lady Falcons over the Fieldcrest Lady Knights, 45-41. The GCMS girls have improved their record to 19-8 on the season.
GCMS WINS OVER OLD WAUSECA RIVAL P-B-L -- by Tom Benefiel (1-30-12) Avenging an loss to Paxton-Buckely-Loda, the GCMS Lady Falcons spoil the Panther's senior night in Paxton by winning 45-38. The Falcons were led in scoring by Angel Gaesser's 18 points, followed by Jaymi Nettleton with nine. Gaesser made nine free-throws in the 4th quarter.
FALCON BOYS JUST CAN'T SCORE, LOSE AGAIN -- by Tom Benefiel (1-28-12) GCMS still struggles to score as they lose another HOIC game to LeRoy, 38-30. The Falcons were led in scoring by Jake Johnson with nine points, followed by Sam Johnson's seven. The Panthers got 10 points from Seth Ward and nine points from Nick Aupperle.
WIN OVER TRI-POINT ON SENIOR DAY CAPS FOUR WINS IN ONE WEEK FOR THE LADY FALCONS -- by Tom Benefiel (1-28-12) If you like watching free-throw shooting, you would have loved this game. The Tri-Point Lady Chargers and the host GCMS Lady Falcons combine for 52 foul shots as GCMS wins on Senior Day against Tri-Point, 59-36. Leading the way for the Falcons was Angel Gaesser with 17 points, followed by Katie Massey with 13 points and 12 scored by Jordyn Nettleton. GCMS shot 30 free-throws and made 19. Tri-Point was paced by the nine points from Kenzie Krause and Taylor Roach each. The Chargers shot 22 free-throws, making 10..
FALCONS TAKE ON DEE-MACK, LOSE -- by Tom Benefiel (1-27-12) The GCMS Falcons make the long trip to Mackinaw and lose to the Dee-Mack Chiefs, 37-31. GCMS was led in scoring by Sam Johnson with 11 points, followed by Jake Johnson's seven. From the foul line, GCMS was three of nine. The Chiefs were paced by Brandon Stiers' 15 points, followed by Collin Soliday with 10. Dee-Mack made 10 of 19 free-throws.
LADY FALCONS WIN OVER LEXINGTON -- by Tom Benefiel (1-23-12) At home after their 3rd place showing at the McLean County Tournament, the GCMS Lady Falcons continue their winning ways by beating Lexington, 58-44. GCMS was led in scoring by Angel Gaesser's 23 points, followed by Katie Massey with nine. Lexington was paced by Taylor Winterland's 15 points, with Sydney Freed scoring 14.
McLEAN COUNTY TOURNEY - GIRLS 3rd PLACE GAME -- by Tom Benefiel (1-22-12) The GCMS Lady Falcons use a decisive 17 to 8 scoring run in the 3rd quarter of the 3rd place game of the McLean County Tournament to beat the Lady Knights of Fieldcrest, 41-40. Annie Schultz sank a free throw with 15 seconds left for the margin of victory. Regan Romshek led the Falcons with 14 points, while Haley Ruestman scored 21 points for Fieldcrest.
McLEAN COUNTY TOURNEY - GIRLS SEMI-FINALS -- by Tom Benefiel (1-19-12) The Lady Titans of El Paso-Gridley remain unbeaten as they beat the GCMS Lady Falcons in the McLean County Tournament, 48-33. GCMS was led in scoring by Angel Gaesser with 10 points, followed by eight points from Jaymi Nettleton. The Lady Titans were paced by Rebecca Ehresman's 17 points, followed by Cody Schlipf's 12 points.
McLEAN COUNTY TOURNEY - ROUND 2 -- by Tom Benefiel (1-14-12) The GCMS Falcons let the Heyworth Hornets score too much in the first quarter to overcome their lead, losing 66-55. GCMS was led in scoring by Sam Johnson with 17 points, followed by Ben Eades with 11. Heyworth was led by Zach Quinn's 26 points, with Spencer Marlett scoring 22. GCMS is eliminated from the McLean County Tournament and will no play again until January 28th.
McLEAN COUNTY TOURNEY - ROUND 1 -- by Tom Benefiel (1-14-12) Coming off a one-point loss to Tri-Valley the night before, a motivated Ridgeview Mustangs take out their frustrations against the visiting GCMS Falcons. The Mustangs won, 66-47. Leading the way for the Falcons was Gabe Kerber with 11 points, followed by Sam Johnson and Reese Simpson with eight points apiece. GCMS shot five free-throws, making two. Ridgeview's leading scorer was Bryce Powell with 18 points, followed by Dana Bose with 14 and Josh Weir with nine. The Mustangs were 12 of 19 on foul shots.
EL PASO-GRIDLEY WHIPS GCMS -- by Tom Benefiel (1-10-12) In a Heart Of Illinois Conference Game in Gibson City, the El Paso-Gridley Titans blast the GCMS Falcons, 77-48. Sam Johnson led the Falcons with 19 points, followed by five each from Gabe Kerber and Reese Simpson. GCMS was eight of 11 on free-throws. The Titans were led by Brian Ehresman's 22 points, followed by Jake Ruestman's 15. EPG was 12 of 13 from the foul line.
GCMS GIRLS HOSTS EL PASO-GRIDLEY -- by Tom Benefiel (1-9-12) The Lady Falcons play undefeated El Paso-Gridley tough until scoring went cold in the 3rd quarter as the Lady Titans pull away to win, 39-30. GCMS (10-7, 4-3 HOIC) were led by Annie Schultz with 12 points, followed by Jordan Nettleton's eight points. EPG (18-0, 8-0) was led by the 14 points from both Rebekah Ehresman and Codee Schlipf. In the first game, it was the sophomore Titans over the Falcons, 39-33.
FALCON GIRLS START SLOW, CAN'T CATCH RAIDERS -- by Tom Benefiel (1-7-12) In a Saturday afternoon varsity girls basketball game in Gibson City, it was the Iroquois West Lady Raiders over the GCMS Lady Falcons, 33-30. Angel Gaesser scored 10 points for GCMS, with Regan Romshek adding six. I-W was led by Jen Cox's 10 points, along with Morgan Small with seven. In the earlier contest, the sophomore Falcons beat the Raiders, 28-17.
FALCON BOYS HANG TOUGH WITH TREMONT -- by Tom Benefiel (1-6-12) A much larger and more physical Tremont team get all they can handle from the GCMS Falcons. The Turks pull away at the end to win the HOIC-league game in Gibson City, 50-37. The Falcons were led in scoring by Ben Eades and Jake Johnson's 11 points apiece, with Sam Johnson, limited by fouls scoring nine. GCMS shot 13 free-throws and made five. Blake Uhlman scored 20 points for Tremont with teammate Sammy Bolliger chipping in 17. The Turks won the game at the foul line, shooting 28 and making 18. In the earlier game, the sophomore Falcons beat the young Turks, 41-32. The varsity boys play in Gibson City against league-leading El Paso-Gridley on Tuesday, January 10th with pre-game on WGCY about 7:15 P-M
LADY FALCONS OVERCOME SLOW START, BEAT TREMONT -- by Tom Benefiel (1-5-12) The GCMS Lady Falcons scored only four first quarter points, but the hosts outscored the Tremont Lady Turks 17-6 in a decisive second quarter and cruised onto victory, 51-34. Leading scorers for GCMS were Regan Romshek with 10 points, followed by Latoya Baillie and Angel Gaesser with nine points each. Tremont was led by Jill Runyon and Briley Spitzer's eight points each. In the earlier game, it was the young Turks over the Falcons, 37-23 in the sophomore contest.

GCMS was led in scoring by Sam Johnson with 13 points, with Jake Johnson scoring four. The Chargers were led by Jordan Tharp with 18 points, followed by Dylan Juergens with 16.
HAWK CLASSIC ROUND 3 - GCMS STRUGGLES TO SCORE AGAIN -- by Tom Benefiel (12-28-11) The GCMS Falcons boys varsity started out with a five to nothing lead, then found their offensive touch desert them as they struggle to score the rest of the game as Reed Custer pulls away to win, 43-32 during the third round of the Hawk Classic in Fairbury. The Falcons were led in scoring by Sam Johnson with 14 points, followed by Wiley Hasty with six. The Comets were led by Ryan Johnson's 11 points, with Tyler Foote chipping in eight.
HAWK CLASSIC ROUND 2 - FALCONS CAN'T SCORE IN SECOND HALF, LOSE TO LEXINGTON -- by Tom Benefiel (12-27-11) In the second round of the Hawk Classic at Prairie Central High School, the Falcons boys varsity only score nine second-half points as Lexington pulls away to win, 38-24. GCMS was led in scoring by Gabe Kerber with nine points, followed by Wiley Hasty's four. The Falcons were without the services of their leading scorer, Sam Johnson, due to an illness. The Minutemen were led in scoring by Michael Baker and Donovan Laible who scored 10 points each, while Taylor Schnider scored nine.
HAWK CLASSIC ROUND 1 - FALCONS EARN FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON! -- by Tom Benefiel (12-26-11) The GCMS Falcons, leading most of the game, found themselves behind for the first time with only seconds remaining. However, Gabe Kerber drilled a 3-point shot for the Falcons as they win for the first time this season. The Falcons were led in scoring by Sam Johnson with eight points, followed by Wiley Hasty with seven points and Jake Johnson with six. The Raiders were paced by Keith Zirkle's 13 second-half points, followed by Kyle Pool with 11. GCMS takes on Lexington on Tuesday, December 27th at 1 P-M during the second day of the Hawk Classic in Fairbury.
LADY FALCONS LOSE THRILLER IN OVERTIME AT FISHER -- by Tom Benefiel (12-22-11) For the first three quarters, the GCMS Lady Falcons found themselves behind the Fisher Bunnies by eight or nine points for most of the game. However, the Falcons came back to tie it at the end of regulation, but Fisher prevailed in overtime, 49-45. GCMS (7-3) was led in scoring by Annie Schultz's 10 points, followed by nine points from Katie Massey. Fisher (8-4) was paced by Ashley Miller's 14 points.

Timely free-throws and a big 15-point fourth quarter for the Knights helps Blue Ridge pull away at the end to defeat the Falcons, 49-45 in Gibson City. GCMS was led in scoring by Gabe Kerber with 14 points, followed by nine from Jake Johnson. The Falcons shot only seven free-throws, making four. The Knights were led by Travis Nichols' 18 points, followed by Tucker Johnson and Michael Plunk with 12 points each. Blue Ridge was nine of 17 on foul shots. GCMS GIRLS HOLD ON TO BEAT VISITING TRI-VALLEY -- by Tom Benefiel (12-5-11) The GCMS Lady Falcons race out to an 8-0 lead that evaporated like their shooting touch in the 2nd quarter, but come back to prevail over the Vikings of Tri-Valley, 43-36. The Falcons were led in scoring by Jaymi Nettleton with 16 points, followed by the 14 points put in by Regan Romshek. GCMS shot 22 free-throws and made 12. Tri-Valley was paced by Maddie Merritt's 14 points, followed by 10 points from Mikaela Carr. The Vikings made six of 10 foul shots. In the earlier game, the sophomore Vikings beat the Lady Falcons, 35-17.
HOOPESTON AREA DENIES THE FALCONS THEIR FIRST WIN -- by Tom Benefiel (12-3-11) At one point of the 3rd quarter, the GCMS Falcons led the Hoopeston Area Cornjerkers by 10 points and had the ball. Timely baskets and good free-throw shooting got the 'Jerkers back into the game they ultimately won, 49-46. GCMS had great balanced scoring that included 13 points from Sam Johnson, Gabe Kerber with 11 points and Nick Retherford with 10. The Falcons shot only 11 foul shots, making six. Hoopeston Area made 16 of their 22 free-throws to help them come back in the game. The Cornjerkers were led in scoring by two sophomores with Daniel Lawson scoring 20 points and Mason Layden with 11.
FLANAGAN-CORNELL PULLS AWAY FOR WIN OVER GCMS BOYS -- by Tom Benefiel (12-2-11) The GCMS Falcons are still looking for their first win of the season as they fall to the Flanagan-Cornell Falcons, 60-41. GCMS was led in scoring by Gabe Kerber with 18 points, followed by Sam Johnson with 15. GCMS shot 11 free-throws, making seven. Flanagan-Cornell's Matt Harrison scored 19 points while Alex Bullard added 15. F-C was six of 10 on foul shots.
GCMS TOURNAMENT GAME 4 - 7th PLACE GAME - GCMS LETS ONE SLIP AWAY AGAINST BLUE RIDGE -- by Tom Benefiel (11-26-11) GCMS hurt themselves by fouling the Blue Ridge Knights early and often keeping the Falcons from a victory to close out their holiday tournament. The Falcons were led by Sam Johnson with 21 points, followed by 10 points from Seth McCall and eight from Jake Johnson. GCMS made 11 of 18 foul shots. Blue Ridge was paced by Michael Plunk's 34 points, followed by Clint O'Neal with 12. The Knights shot a lot of free-throws, making 24 of 38 attempts. GCMS finishes their 40th annual Thanksgiving tournament 0-4.
GCMS TOURNAMENT GAME 3 - GCMS BLASTED BY RANTOUL -- by Tom Benefiel (11-25-11) The GCMS Falcons came out against an athletic Rantoul Eagles team and jumped out to a nice 15-10 lead in the first eight minutes. However, the wheels fell off the GCMS team as the Eagles put on a huge run up to halftime, outscoring the tournament host Falcons 26-4 while cruising to a commanding 48-19 lead. GCMS was led in scoring by Sam Johnson with 20 points, followed by Jake Johnson with nine. The Falcons were five of eight on free-throws. Rantoul was paced by the 25 points by Johnny Jones, followed by the 20 points by Travis Britt. The Eagles shot 19 foul shots, making 13.
GCMS TOURNAMENT GAME 2 - ROCKETS BEAT FALCONS -- by Tom Benefiel (11-22-11) Scoring woes continue for the GCMS Falcons as they lose another tournament game, this one to the Rockets of Roanoke-Benson, 49-38. The Falcons were paced by the eight points from Sam Johnson and seven from John Massey. GCMS shot five free-throws, making two. Roanoke-Benson was led in scoring by Brandon DeFries' 20 points. They made seven of 15 foul shots.
GCMS TOURNAMENT GAME 1 - FALCONS FALL TO HERITAGE -- by Tom Benefiel (11-21-11) In the opening game of the season to start the 40th annual Thanksgiving tournament in Gibson City, the Heritage Hawks outlast the GCMS Falcons, 64-52. GCMS was led in scoring by Sam Johnson with 12 points, followed by Gabe Kerber with 11 points and Seth McCall with 10. The Falcons were 11 of 13 from the free-throw line. John Taylor pumped in 35 points to lead the Hawks. Wes Carman had six points while Heritage shot 24 free-throws, making 13.
